The Royal University of Phnom Penh Turns 63

PHNOM PENH – The Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) is celebrating its 63rd anniversary and holding a fair from Jan. 13 through 15 to raise funds for students and departments.



Students from a number of departments have joined force and set up 150 booths to sell food, drinks, books, souvenirs and so on to help support the university’s activities.



RUPP was officially established on Jan. 13, 1960, under the name of Royal Khmer University. Its departments in the 1960s and early 1970s included the National Institute of Law and Economy Studies, the Royal School of Medicine, the National School of Commerce, the National Pedagogy Institute, the Faculty of Literature and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Classes were held in French at the time.



The University has expanded over the years and now also includes the Institute of Foreign Languages, the Institute of International Studies and Public Policy, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Development Studies.
