The Statue of Sinn Sisamouth: the Triumph of the “Golden Voice” over the Khmer Rouge

There could be thousands of things to say regarding the return, this coming Monday, of Donald Trump to the White House. One of them deserves special attention: the entry of multi-billionaire Elon Musk—the boss of, among others, X (formerly Twitter), of Tesla and Space X—in the government of the United-States in which virtually only feature multimillionaires, all of them devoted to the president.
In the case of Elon Musk, one could legitimately wonder whether it actually might be him, after having spent lavishly to have Trump elected, who would from now on be the master of the world’s leading power.
Since he was appointed co-boss of the “Department of Government Efficiency” with the mission of slashing budgets and federal agencies, not a day goes by without him, through X, speaking out on a host of subjects, especially to support Europe's extreme right-wing nationalists.
That he would have political convictions, fine. But that he would spread them across the world through his 200 million subscribers by way of fake news, disinformation and insults is enough to scare.
Will disinforming, lying to destabilize or even overthrow the powers hostile to it and hostile to its vision of the United States become the number one weapon of the foreign policy of this new U.S. administration. This is to be feared.
Letting conspiration theories and hatred of scientists, and racist and sexist ideas spread, this is what Elon Musk has done since he has taken control of X by firing overnight the platform’s moderators.
Following his example, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s boss, has just announced that there was too much fact-checking at Facebook.
With these two giants—and the despotic regimes of the whole world that only hold on to power because of propaganda (and repression)—on the same wavelength, journalists, scientists and people throughout the whole world run the risk of being flooded by a constant tsunami of lies.
With Elon Musk coming to power in the wake of Donald Trump, the outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed concern that the U.S. democratic system might have given birth to a monster of colossal strength that could destroy it for the benefit of a small tech oligarchy.
Bitter loser's words? We’d like it to be so, but Elon Musk is not a man to take action and pay for nothing.
Some people say that the war of egos between Trump and Musk, which is bound to explode, could thwart Musk’s plans. Trump against Musk? Let the party begin!
In any event, don’t forget the date of Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025. It’s the day before.
