PHNOM PENH — The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has convened an extraordinary meeting to elect members for the party’s senior leadership positions including the new finance committee.

Held on Dec. 9 and Dec. 10, the party said on Facebook, the meeting is attended by top leaders including party President Hun Sen and Honorary President Heng Samrin presiding over the event as well as 3,600 members. Prime Minister Hun Manet is also attending.

In his opening speech on Dec. 9, Samrin said that the meeting will approve draft work report for 2023 and the party’s direction for 2024.

During the meeting, members of the party’s central committee will be elected, he said, adding that the central committee will then elect members of its permanent committee and deputy president. Members of the finance committee will also be elected along with its new head.

The CPP has four deputy presidents: Men Sam An, Sar Kheng, Say Chhum and Tea Banh. Its central committee includes 865 members and its permanent committee has more than 30 members.

The meeting was convened after the generational transfer of power following the CPP’s landslide victory in the July 2023 national election, which has seen many of the old guard’s sons and daughters take high-ranking positions within the government, replacing their parents.

“Under the leadership of the new government with Hun Manet as prime minister, the overall situation in Cambodia has continued to be normal in all areas of politics, economy, society, especially foreign affairs, and diplomacy has become busier,” Samrin said.
