PHNOM PENH – Six Cambodian students studying in the conflict-ridden Sudan capital Khartoum have arrived in Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Hun Sen said.

The students had been evacuated safely by ship with the assistance of Malaysia.

“Now they arrive safely in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to the Malaysian government for facilitating the evacuation. He also thanked the Saudi government for providing a short stay for the students.

Khartoum has been the scene of fierce fighting between two rival forces, the Sudanese Armed Forces led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

Countries have evacuated thousands of their citizens by air or through Sudan’s Red Sea port.
