PHNOM PENH – Siem Reap’s new airport has become an instant hit for local people to visit a week after its launch.
Provincial governor Prak Sophoan posted photos on his social media account showing crowds visiting the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport in Sotr Nikum district.
“Why can’t our people go to see such a good historical airport? They did not go to cause trouble or create unrest,” he wrote.
“We are proud that a forest that was once heavily mined has become the site of such a development.”
Sophoan said the airport management and district administration had created order on the premises and in the surrounding area.
Authorities had facilitated the safety and security of international travelers, especially those who want to see the $1 billion airport covering 700 hectares and which is managed by Angkor International Airport Investment.
The airport, about 40km from Angkor Park and 50km from Siem Reap city, started operating on Oct. 16 and will be inaugurated in November.
It has a 3,600-meter runway, which is of 4E-level international standard and can handle long distance flights.
It can handle 7 million passengers per year and is planned to accommodate 12 million a year in 2040.
