Siem Reap Expressway’s Feasibility Study to Start ‘Soon’

PHNOM PENH – China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) will start the feasibility studies of the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap expressway soon, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport said.

Minister Sun Chanthol sent a letter to request cooperation from the relevant authorities, including Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, and Siem Reap provinces to cooperate with the CRBC's study process in their jurisdiction.

Chanthol's letter, dated March 24, confirmed that the feasibility study will start soon, but no official timeline has been revealed.

Ministry of Public Works and Transport Spokesman Heang Sotheayut could not be reached for further clarification on March 27.

In addition to the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap expressway, the Ministry has allowed the Chinese State-owned company to study the potentiality of another expressway linking Phnom Penh to Poipet, at the border with Thailand.

Such a development would be the company’s fourth project in the country, after Phnom Penh-Siem Reap, Phnom Penh-Bavet, and Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressways.

The latest is the only highway project CRBC has so far carried out in Cambodia. Worth $2 billion, it opened to the public in November 2022 and made $11 million in revenue in four months, according to the Ministry.

The Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway’s construction is set to start in mid-2023, with a planned investment of $1.7 billion.
