Last public words were to ‘compile, record and document Khmer classical dance for posterity’

PHNOM PENH - King Norodom Sihamoni lit the fuse to cremate the body of his half-sister Princess Norodom Buppha Devi on Monday in a grand funeral ceremony at Wat Botum Park.

The king took part in the ceremony with Queen Mother Monineath Sihanouk, senior government officials and representatives of the Cambodian people.

Princess Buppha Devi died on November 18 of an undisclosed illness. She was 76.

The princess was an Apsara dancer in the Royal Ballet and taught classical dance between 1960 and 1970, sometimes performing before foreign leaders visiting Cambodia.

Her last public words at a lunar ceremony earlier this month were to “compile, record and document Khmer classical dance for posterity.”

She also appealed to Cambodians to keep Khmer classical dance alive.
