PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Manet has congratulated Paetongtarn Shinawatra on being elected as new Thai premier, looking forward to work for mutual benefits of both countries.
Supported by the ruling coalition led by Pheu Thai Party, Paetongtarn won a majority vote in a Parliament session on August 16. She replaced Srettha Thavisin who was ousted by the Constitution Court due to an ethics violation.
In his congratulatory letter, Hun Manet said the election was a testament to the trust and confidence Thai people have in Paetongtarn’s leadership.
He said the countries cherished long-standing relations and close cooperation which have brought tangible benefits to their peoples.
“I firmly believe that, under your leadership, we will continue to enhance our strategic partnership,” he said.
“In this spirit, I am looking forward to working closely with you to further advance our relations and cooperation for the mutual benefit of our two countries and people, contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the region and beyond.”
Hun Manet met Paetongtarn on March 14 when she visited Phnom Penh in her capacity as leader of Pheu Thai at the invitation of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party and Senate President Hun Set. The two ruling parties agreed to strengthen ties during the visit.
Hun Sen also extended congratulations to Paetongtarn.
He and her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, have maintained a long relationship. Hun Sen flew to Bangkok to met Thaksin, whom he regards as a big brother, in February.
