PHNOM PENH – Phnom Penh’s riverside is about to get a vibrant makeover and is due to be named the Chaktomuk Walking Street.

Named after the unique confluence of the Tonle Sap, Bassac, Lower, and Upper Mekong rivers, the new attraction promises a lively blend of culture, entertainment, and local flavor.

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng announced the exciting development, outlining plans to transform the popular weekend spot into a must-visit destination.

“We want to create a truly engaging experience for everyone," Sreng said.

The vision includes a rich tapestry of traditional Khmer music performances, enticing street food stalls, and dazzling decorative lighting, all set against the backdrop of the Royal Palace.  Visitors can also look forward to browsing book stalls and enjoying a variety of live performances.

Since its pilot phase began on February 1, the walking street has already received enthusiastic responses from both locals and tourists.

“The initial feedback has been incredibly positive,” said Governor Sreng.

Building on this success, the Phnom Penh Administration is planning a significant expansion of activities with the official naming of the street.

“We're adding art and circus performances to the mix,” Sreng revealed on February 9, “along with dedicated spaces for reading and book sales.”

“We'll also be showcasing the richness of Khmer arts with performances of Chapei Dang Veng, Ayay comedy, and Yike,” he added.

The pilot phase has been invaluable in identifying areas for improvement.

Sreng emphasized the commitment to enhancing the visitor experience, including upgraded lighting to ensure safe and enjoyable evening strolls.

While the official launch date is yet to be finalized, Sreng confirmed it will happen once all the elements are in place, including inviting dining areas, entertainment spaces, art performances, and stalls featuring local products.

The Chaktomuk Walking Street will operate every Saturday and Sunday from 6 PM to 11 PM along Sisowath Quay, stretching to the front of the Royal Palace.  The area will be pedestrian-only during these hours, with convenient parking and public restrooms available nearby.

Its prime location offers easy access to a host of Phnom Penh's other attractions, including the Sosoro Museum, the National Museum of Cambodia, Wat Botum Park, the Old Market, Kandal Market, and the Chaktomuk Conference Hall, making the Chaktomuk Walking Street a perfect addition to any Phnom Penh itinerary.
