PHNOM PENH – African swine fever has been ruled out as the cause of death of 130 pigs in Svay Rieng province.

“The result was already out, and we found that those pigs did not have the African swine fever like we suspected,” provincial Animal Health and Production Office director Pen Chanthy said.

Since Jan. 13, as many as 130 pigs of a family-owned farm in Kandal village have died. Chanthy said on Jan. 15 that he had tested them for African swine fever.

He told local people about sanitary measures such as protecting and spraying pesticides in pig cages, and distributed vaccines for pigs to other residents for safety reason even though he was uncertain of the cause of deaths.

Tests showed that other diseases killed the pigs and that farmers did not treat them correctly. He was not immediately able to identify the cause of the deaths.

African swine fever is an incurable deadly disease which spreads quickly among pigs with either direct or indirect contact.
