PHNOM PENH – More than 520,000 people have registered to date on the voters’ list that will be used for the general elections in 2023, the National Election Committee (NEC) announced on Dec. 3.

Hang Puthea, a member and spokesperson of the NEC, said that, as of Dec 1, a total of 526,925 persons had registered to vote next year. People have been given from Oct. 20 to Dec. 8 to register, he said. This period of 50 days is long enough, and it will not be extended even if there still are people who have not registered, he said.

“If people of voting age have not registered to vote, it is their right,” Puthea said. “There is no punishment or coercion.”

In order to register to vote at any polling station in a commune, Cambodian citizens must be physically present and must have a valid Cambodian identity card or other documents or verification of identity, he said.

Cambodian citizens have the right to vote from the age of 18 and must reside in the commune in which they are registering to vote.

Cambodia’s national election will take place on July 23, 2023.
