Hun Many Takes Step to Deputy PM Role

The National Assembly has voted to approve Civil Work Minister Hun Many (left) as a new deputy prime minister and Sry Thammarong (center)and Pen Vibol, currently Ministers Attached to the Prime Minister, as senior ministers.

PHNOM PENH – The National Assembly has voted to approve Civil Service Minister Hun Many as a new deputy prime minister and Sry Thammarong and Pen Vibol, currently Ministers Attached to the Prime Minister, as senior ministers.



The first extraordinary session, chaired by Assembly President Khuon Sudary, was attended by 120 members. All voted to approve the appointments.



Hun Many will be the 11th deputy prime minister, joining Neth Savoeun, Aun Pornmoniroth, Say Samal, Sar Sokha,  Tea Seiha,  Vongsey Vissoth, Koeut Rith, Hang Chuon Naron, Sun Chanthol  and Sok Chenda Sophea.



Sry Thammarong and Pen Vibol will join the other 21 senior ministers, including Kun Kim, Ho Sithy, Ouk Rabun, Om Yentieng, Ieng Mouly, Thong Khon, Pich Sophoan, Prum Sokha, Sak Setha, Othsman Hassan, Y Chhean, Ouk Prathna, Ouch Borith, Svay Sitha, Chhay Sinarith, Ly Thuch, Chhem Kieth Rethy, Chhieng Yanara, Sok Siphana, Keo Remy and Ky Tech.



Once approved, King Norodom Sihamoni will issue a royal decree appointing them to the posts. 



The Assembly will vote for candidates for two Senate seats on Mar. 1. Sudary said five people have applied for the seats. 



By law, the Assembly appoints two lawmakers for the upper chamber which will hold elections on Feb. 25. Two other members will be appointed by the King while another 58 will be elected.



Hun Sen is also standing in the election which is widely expected to be won by the CPP given its majority in the Assembly and in commune councils.
