Hun Manet Elected CPP’s Deputy President

PHNOM PENH — Prime Minister Hun Manet has been elected deputy president of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) headed by his father, former Prime Minister Hun Sen, increasing the number of individuals holding this position to five.



Hun Manet’s election to the post took place on the second day of the party’s congress on Dec. 10. He is also a member of the CPP’s permanent committee and head of the party’s youth wing.



The other four deputy presidents are Men Sam An, Sar Kheng, Say Chhum and Tea Banh.



During the congress, 496 members were elected to the party’s central committee, which now has 1,312 members. The new members consist of ministers, provincial governors, and officials holding various positions in the new government that was formed after the July 2023 national elections, which the CPP won, obtaining 120 of the 125 parliamentary seats.



During its meeting at the congress, the CPP permanent committee added 23 members to the committee, which is the top decision-making body of the CPP that has been ruling the country for more than 40 years. The committee now has 58 members.



Eight out of the current 10 deputy prime ministers are new members of the party’s permanent committee. While Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth and former national police chief Neth Savoeun were already members, Chiv Keng, president of the Supreme Court, and Chea Serey, governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, are new members of the permanent committee.



Hun Many, son of the party’s president and younger brother of Hun Manet, also made the list along with tycoon Ly Yong Phat, National Police Chief Sar Thet, army chief Mao Sophan, navy chief Tea Vinh, air force chief Soeng Samnang, head of the prime minister’s bodyguard unit Hin Bun Heang, and senior ministers Ouch Borith, Othsman Hasan and Om Yen Tieng.

Ly Yong Phat was also elected as chairman of finance committee of the central committe.
