High-school Students Build Cleaning Robot

PHOM PENH – Four students from Chumpouvorn General and Technical High School in Phnom Penh have engineered a small remote-controlled robot that can help people clean their homes.

Ly Hongmean, Nith Sovanrath, Toun Sok Reaksa and Sida Sokleap built the mobile device which is controlled by a phone app.

“It can clean in narrow spaces, especially to alleviate the difficulties of the elderly,” team leader Hongmean said.

The battery-powered robot has a small container to store water to be used in cleaning.

The team spent five months on the project, including three months building the model. Challenges included choosing the shape and the design.

“We had different ideas for the robot. At the end, we decided to build it by not adding any decoration,” Sovanrath said.

They spent around $30 on materials. After successfully building the model, the team aim to build more to sell.

“At first I did not expect that we could do that because it was difficult to build components and it took time for coding,” Sovanrath said.

All the team members are currently studying electronics. Sovanrath said the skill can help developing society as the technology sector is gradually integrated in the country.
