PHNOM PENH – Keisuke Honda announced on June 1 the closure of Siem Reap-based football club Soltilo Angkor FC.



The announcement was made on the Japanese athlete's​ Facebook page, who founded the club in 2017.



“We have been running this club for six years with the idea of ​​making football available not only in Phnom Penh but also in rural areas. Unfortunately, we are unable to find a sponsor, and we have no choice but to make the decision to stop our operations,” he said.



Since its debut six years ago, the club was competing in Cambodian League 2, the second division of Cambodian football.



Honda, who has been the head coach of the Cambodian national football team from 2018 to 2023, extended his gratitude to the people of Cambodia, Siem Reap, and all the fans for their support.



In his message, he wished the Cambodia National Football Team good luck for the coming years.



“I support the Cambodian team, and I believe one day it will be qualified to play at the World Cup,” he said.



Soltilo Angkor FC expressed its gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has been involved with their journey from the beginning.



“Although our club will cease its operations and not embark on a new journey, our memories will endure forever, and we hope that the players will continue to shine in their new teams and the supporters will channel their passionate energy into another club,” said Sotilo Angkor FC.
