Five Held over National Assembly Explosive

PHNOM PENH – Five people have been arrested in connection with the discovery of a grenade near the National Assembly.



The grenade was in a cake and placed along National Assembly Street between the parliament building and NagaWorld in Chamkarmon district.



It was found on Dec. 15 by a garbage collector and detonated in a controlled explosion by experts from the Cambodian Mine Action Center.



Chhay Kim Khoeun, spokesman and deputy commissioner of the National Police, said on Dec. 16 that police had arrested five people on suspicion of involvement.



“Four Chinese and one Cambodian have been arrested and are being questioned,” he said. Kim Khoeun said he couldn’t offer more detail because the authorities were investigating further.
