PHNOM PENH -- Cambodian authorities had arrested 8,750 drug-related suspects in the first half of 2019, up 10.5 percent over the same period last year, said an Interior Ministry's anti-drug department report on Wednesday.

Some 4,795 are alleged drug traffickers and 3,955 are drug users, the report said, adding that 167 of the suspects, including 38 women, are foreigners in seven nationalities.

The authorities had cracked down on a total of 4,117 cases involving illicit drugs during the January-June period this year, up 3.2 percent over the same period last year, it said.

According to the report, about 343 kilograms of drugs were seized, up 40 percent from 244 kilograms.

The Southeast Asian nation has no death sentence for illicit drug traffickers. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drug will be jailed for life.
