PHNOM PENH – The Ministry of Commerce is to collaborate with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba to directly sell Cambodian products in the Chinese market as well as ASEAN countries through the Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP).

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Cham Nimul, Commerce Minister, and Wen Jia, president of public affairs of Alibaba Group, on Oct. 17.

“The partnership will not only promote the sales of Cambodian products in the Chinese market but will also boost e-commerce, as Alibaba currently has roughly 1.3 billion customers worldwide,” Wen Jia told Prime Minister Hun Manet at a courtesy meeting in Beijing.

The e-commerce company has already sold Cambodian products such as milled rice, pepper, and longan on its platform.

Hun Manet said Cambodian entrepreneurs would use this platform to make the best use of the international market.

He expressed appreciation for Alibaba's collaboration with Cambodian companies, enterprises as well as ministries and institutions in promoting the sale of Cambodian products and services to the global market.

According to the General Department of Customs and Excise, trade between Cambodia and China from January to September reached $9 billion, up 3.4 percent on the same period last year.

Cambodian exports to China amounted to more than $1 billion, rising by 18.3 percent, while imports from China increased by 1.8 percent.

China is Cambodia’s largest trading partner, followed by the United States.
