Cambodia to Take Part in 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Pre Qualifiers in Guam

The country is also set to take part in the pre-SEA Games tourney in Bali

PHNOM PENH--The Cambodia National Basketball Team has been drawn in group C for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup pre qualifiers due to take place in Guam from May 31.



The road to FIBA Asia Cup 2025 starts in 2022 as the first round of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 pre-qualifiers are scheduled for a tip-off from May 31 to June 5 as confirmed by the FIBA Asia Regional Office.



There are 18 teams that will compete in the Asia Cup pre-qualifiers, and nine teams each are in the Western and Eastern regions. The pre-qualifiers serve to qualify eight of these teams to the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 qualifiers, joining the 16 teams that are qualified for FIBA Asia Cup 2022.



Cambodia is drawn from teams in the Eastern region of the pre-qualifiers consisting of teams from Oceania and the SEABA and EABA Sub-Zones. These include:



● Guam

● Tahiti

● Singapore

● Thailand

● Hong Kong

● Malaysia

● Cambodia

● Vietnam

● Mongolia



The pre-qualifiers will pay in two rounds. In the first round, the teams in each region will be divided into two groups with groups A (four teams) and B (five teams) for the Western region and groups C (four teams) and D (five teams) for the Eastern region. These groups will play in separate round Robin tournaments to qualify the three best-ranked teams to the second round.



Cambodia is in group C alongside the host Guam, Singapore and Hongkong.



In the second round, the three best-ranked teams in Groups A and B will combine as group E of the second round while the three best-ranked teams in groups C and D will combine as group F. Each team will play against the three new teams in their respective groups. The records of each team will carry over from the First Round.



The four best-ranked teams in each group will qualify for the Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers.



The first round of the Asia Cup 2025 pre-qualifiers is set to take place from May 31 to June 5 as the second round will take place from February 1 to 4 in 2023.



Austin Koledoye, Secretary-General of the Cambodia Basketball Federation confirmed Cambodia’s participation, adding it will serve as preparation for the 2023 SEA Games.



“It is a big challenge for us, but it is exactly what we want as we prepare for the 2023 SEA Games. The team is currently preparing for the Hanoi SEA Games set for May 12, and they will fly to Guam Right after that to join the Fiba Asia Cup pre-qualifiers,” Koledoye said. 



“The pre-SEA Game tournament is also coming up in Bali just before the team leaves for Vietnam, and therefore, we are looking to participate in that event as part of our preparations,” he continued.
