PHNOM PENH — The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has launched a “talent show” in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport to help students at the high school level become solid digital citizens.

According to Chea Vandeth, minister of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC), the COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the importance of digitalization in Cambodia; forced people to adopt new ways in work, study and function their daily lives and, as they had to use technology more efficiently, has led them to discover the use of new technology in every sector.

Speaking on June 2 during the opening ceremony of the reality competition show “Digital Talents” launched by the MPTC and open to students, Vandeth said that education provided the model of adaptation to new technology during COVID-19 because, even though students faced challenges, there also were opportunities and they graduated.

“I believe everyone reaps benefits from the new context of technology, whether it’s small or large,” he stressed.

The Cambodian government has established the Digital Economy and Society Framework 2021-2035 whose aim is to build a digital economy by promoting digital adaptation and transformation involving people, businesses, and state institutions.

This involves the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport having the equipment and human resources to train students. The Ministry of Post and Telecommunication is now working on setting up a new program to build at least two computer labs in each province that would offer students free practical and online learning.

This will help students at all levels understand the technology from the basic to higher levels compared to what they learn at school, the minister said.

Sann Vathana, secretary of state at the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports, noted that, in order to build a digital economy and society that are directed by digital experts, those digital experts must be produced, not only within the walls of educational institutions, but also be anyone who has such talent.
