PHNOM PENH – The Girl Guides Association of Cambodia (GGAC) has been selected to host the 39th World Association of Girls Guides and Girl Scouts Conference (WAGGGS) for the first time in Cambodia’s history in 2026.

Pich Chanmony, the wife of future Prime Minister Hun Manet, led Cambodia's team during the 38th WAGGGS conference, which took place in Cyprus from July 26 to July 31. She is the GGAC’s chief commissioner and headed the delegation to the country’s capital city, Nicosia.

Cambodia, which has been a member of the association since 2011 and has over 2,000 members, was selected against Ghana, which has nearly 200,000 members.

WAGGGS is a global association supporting female empowerment for guides and scouts, trying to enable girls and young women to reach their potential as responsible citizens of the world. It is present in 152 countries and holds a world conference every three years.

Following the announcement Cambodia would host the next World Conference, GGAC thanked all the members and all the compatriots who have supported them.

“This reflects the solidarity of our compatriots in upholding the reputation of the nation to achieve great achievements in whatever circumstance,” the association said in a statement.

Prime Minister Hun Sen congratulated Cambodia on being selected to host the association’s next conference in 2026.

“This is a new achievement of Cambodia’s foreign policy,” he said on Twitter on July 31.

“Finally we made it,” future Cambodian PM Hun Manet posted on his Facebook page, thanking the Cambodians who help support the country’s candidacy.

The first World Conference was held in Oxford, UK, in 1920, under the auspices of the International Council, which became WAGGGS in 1928.
