PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's anti-drug police have arrested two foreigners for allegedly trafficking illicit drugs, seizing over 40 kilograms of narcotics, the National Police said on Monday.

A Laotian man and a Vietnamese man, both aged 36 years old, were apprehended last Thursday at a shopping mall's parking area in the capital's Meanchey district after a probe for several months.

"Some 40.5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and a Toyota Highlander were confiscated from the duo during the raid," the National Police said on its website.

The Southeast Asian country has no death sentence for a drug trafficker. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs could be jailed for life.

According to the country's Anti-Drug Police Department, Cambodia nabbed 4,485 drug-related suspects, including 67 foreigners, during the January-March period of 2023, seizing a total of 240.8 kilograms of narcotics.

Most of the seized drugs are ketamine, crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine pills, heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, and cathinone.
