PHNOM PENH – Cambodia and Turkiye signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on October 9 to foster cooperation in transportation and the use of international transport corridors.

The effort aims to transform Cambodia into a logistics hub in ASEAN and Turkiye into an economic hub in East Asia and Europe.

The MoU was signed between Public Works and Transport Minister Peng Ponea and Turkish Ambassador to Cambodia Ulku Kocaefe, on behalf of Turkiye’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

In addition to promoting friendly relations and strong collaboration, the MoU will enhance connectivity through key international routes, including the Central Corridor and the TRACECA Corridor.

During the signing ceremony, Ponea expressed appreciation to the ambassador and to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu for proposing the initiative.

“The international transport corridors serve as crucial links for ASEAN, offering opportunities for traffic and goods from Asia to reach the Middle East, North Africa, and the Mediterranean region,” Ponea said.

“As an ASEAN member with a strategic location and favorable conditions for trade and investment, Cambodia has been actively involved in supporting regional trade and investment, particularly through investments in transport and logistics infrastructure.”

Cambodia and Turkiye formally established diplomatic relations in 1959, and Turkiye opened its embassy in Phnom Penh in 2013. Relations have thrived over the past decades, with both governments working to boost trade and investment.

In 2019, both sides pledged to expand trade, setting an annual target of $1 billion as they commemorated the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
