PHNOM PENH — The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has signed up to provide 43 million U.S. dollars to Cambodia for a cross-border livestock health and value chain infrastructure improvement project, according to Cambodia's Ministry of Economy and Finance on Thursday.

Pen Thirong, undersecretary of state at the Cambodian Ministry of Economy and Finance, signed the cooperation financing agreement with an AIIB representative on Tuesday on the sidelines of the eighth annual meeting of the AIIB's board of governors in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, said the ministry.

The financing package included 33 million dollars in concessional financing from the AIIB and 10 million dollars in grant from the Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response Facility Trust Fund, it added.

The project aims to improve the production and raising of animals with quality and hygiene, strengthen the safety and health of animals and human, and prevent and control infectious diseases, it said.

It will also promote cross-border animal trade among the countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion, it said, adding that the project will be carried out in Phnom Penh and the provinces of Kampong Cham, odder Meanchey, Prey Veng, Siem Reap, and Takeo.

Thirong said the cross-border livestock health and value chain infrastructure improvement project was the third financing project provided by the AIIB to the Southeast Asian country since 2020.

"Cooperation financing provided by the AIIB to Cambodia has been making significant contributions to the development of physical infrastructure and the recovery of the Cambodian economy from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.
